The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with tech giant Google, has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for public servants to enhance governance and improve service delivery across the country.

The initiative, unveiled last week in Abuja under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, aims to equip civil servants and government officials with the necessary skills to apply AI tools in their daily operations.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, explained that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision to build a $1 trillion economy and ensure Nigeria remains competitive in the global race for AI adoption.

Dr. Tijani noted that artificial intelligence has become a key driver of productivity in critical sectors such as food security, education, and healthcare. He emphasized the need for public institutions to leverage AI to streamline administrative processes, enhance efficiency, and deliver better outcomes for citizens.

“Government must accelerate its understanding and adoption of artificial intelligence in day-to-day operations,” the minister said, adding that the e-Political Government AI Campus would play a vital role in achieving this goal.

Also speaking, Google’s Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for West Africa, Adewolu Adene, and Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, projected that AI could boost global public sector productivity by $1.75 trillion by 2033, positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.
