The Ondo State Government is set to commence a meter installment payment scheme for residents and businesses across the state, as part of efforts to ensure fair and efficient access to electricity.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, made this known in Akure, revealing that the initiative implemented through the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) is a major component of the O’Datiwa Mass Metering Scheme. The programme, he said, is aimed at promoting reliable, affordable, and transparent power distribution while phasing out the challenges associated with estimated billing.

Engr. Alabi explained that the first phase of the project would cover the installation of 50,000 smart meters in communities, homes, and business premises across Ondo State. According to him, a pilot test of the scheme will begin this month, ahead of the full rollout scheduled for November 2025.

“With this programme, every citizen and business will have access to prepaid meters that guarantee fairness, transparency, and efficiency in energy consumption,” the Commissioner stated.

He further noted that the Ondo State Power Company, in collaboration with accredited Meter Asset Providers (MAPs), will ensure the effective implementation of the metering process while maintaining high technical standards.

Engr. Alabi emphasized that the metering initiative will not only empower consumers but also enhance investor confidence and strengthen the state’s electricity sector by improving revenue assurance. He reaffirmed Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to improving power supply across the state, urging residents to support the programme as it marks a new chapter in the state’s energy reform drive.
