The Coalition Against Substance Abuse Initiative (CONASAI) has once again called on Nigerian parents to take up the mantle of responsible parenting as a vital tool for nation-building and the fight against drug abuse. The organization stressed that quality parental care, proper guidance, and firm discipline are critical to raising morally upright children and securing a better future for the country.

Speaking at a recent awareness campaign, CONASAI emphasized the influential role of parents in shaping the behavior, values, and choices of their children. The group urged parents to be more proactive in monitoring the kinds of friends and peer groups their children associate with, warning that negative peer influence is one of the leading factors pushing young people into substance abuse and criminal behavior.

“Parents must be deeply involved in their children’s lives—not just financially, but emotionally, spiritually, and morally,” the statement read. “Knowing who your child is spending time with can go a long way in preventing deviant behavior and drug addiction.”

The initiative reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse in Nigerian communities and called for a collective approach to tackling the menace. It warned that without strong family foundations, society will continue to suffer from the consequences of neglect and moral decay.

As part of its strategic plan, CONASAI announced that it is preparing to host a National Parental Conference, aimed at enlightening and awakening parents to their responsibilities both at home and within their local communities. The conference will bring together parenting experts, community leaders, teachers, and religious figures to discuss practical ways to support and empower families in the fight against substance abuse.

“This upcoming conference is not just a gathering,” CONASAI noted, “but a movement to reposition parenting as a frontline defense against societal ills. Parents are the first line of protection, and we must empower them to play that role effectively.”

CONASAI reaffirmed its commitment to advocacy, sensitization, and support for families across Nigeria and urged all stakeholders to unite in the common goal of raising responsible, drug-free generations.
