A thick silence fell across the nation as news broke of the passing of Nigeria’s former President, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), a soldier, statesman, and symbol of discipline whose life, in many ways, told the story of Nigeria’s post-independence journey.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari rose from humble beginnings to the highest office in the land not once, but twice: first as a military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as a democratically elected President (2015–2023). His life spanned decades of Nigeria’s transformation, turbulence, and triumph.

A Man of Duty and Discipline:

Buhari first came into national prominence as a military officer, serving with distinction in various capacities, including as Governor of the former Northeastern State, Minister of Petroleum under General Obasanjo, and later as Head of State after the 1983 coup. His reign was marked by a tough anti-corruption stance and the controversial “War Against Indiscipline” (WAI) campaign.

Though his military regime was short-lived, it left a lasting impression: here was a man who believed in structure, frugality, and accountability traits rare in a system burdened with excess and impunity.

A Democratic Return and a Mission Renewed:

After decades in political wilderness and three failed attempts, Buhari staged a historic comeback in 2015, becoming the first opposition candidate to unseat an incumbent President in Nigeria’s history. To many, he symbolized hope for a nation long disillusioned by corruption, insecurity, and lack of direction.

His eight years in office were a mixed basket marked by commendable infrastructure strides, especially in transportation and agriculture, alongside sharp criticisms over economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived aloofness. Yet, even critics could not doubt the sincerity of a man who lived simply, governed with restraint, and never amassed wealth at the nation’s expense.

A Legacy Sealed in Simplicity:

In his post-presidency years, Buhari returned to his beloved Daura, living quietly, often seen tending to his cattle, reading, or receiving well-wishers. He had always said he wanted to be remembered as someone who “gave his best.”

In the end, Buhari remained an enigma deeply respected by some, deeply misunderstood by others. Yet, in death, he has united Nigerians in reflection.

Farewell to a Patriot:

As his body is laid to rest amid military salutes and solemn prayers, the nation mourns not just a former president, but a father figure, flawed but faithful. A man of austere grace. A warrior who fought for unity, a leader who tried to redeem a dream he did not create, but was duty-bound to protect.

May his soul find eternal peace in the fields of Daura, where his journey began and now, ends.
